Alma is a foundation founded by Rina Gitler in 2009, dedicated to the early prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer, as well as breast reconstruction for low-income women. Its mission is to educate about the importance of early detection through writings such as "Mom's Bra," which is currently translated into seven languages, including Nahuatl and Mixtec. Alma seeks to encourage self-examination to prevent or detect breast cancer at an early stage, thus contributing to reducing mortality rates from the disease.
Alma has performed more than 700 surgeries in Mexico, printed and distributed more than 1 million copies of "El brasier de mamá" (Mom's Bra), delivered more than 12,000 external silicone breast prostheses, and conducted three research protocols on hereditary cancer in conjunction with the National Health Laboratory of the UNAM.
How to prevent and detect breast cancer?
Do physical activity at least 30 minutes a day
Maintain a healthy weight
Avoid smoking and limit the amount of alcohol consumed
Self-examination should be performed after age 20, preferably on the fifth day of your period. When doing your checkup, be sure to follow these steps:
1. Check under your right arm.
2. Under the left arm.
3. The whole breast.
4. Above the breast.
5. Lie down and repeat the check.
6. Explore by making circles.
