The black cowboy boots Dua Lipa wore — and made famous on TikTok — are the Botas Jornada Negras by Montserrat Messeguer. Here's the story behind the model, the moment, and how to buy the same pair.

The boots

The Botas Jornada Negras are part of the signature Botas Jornada line by Mexican fashion designer Montserrat Messeguer. They are tall cowboy boots, 100% leather inside and out, built using Goodyear welt construction, and finished with the line's signature hand-embroidered Ave Fénix (Phoenix Bird) motif. Each pair is handmade in Mexico over approximately 250 production steps by roughly 50 artisans.

The "Negras" colorway is the black version of the model — the most-requested of all Botas Jornada colorways, and the version Dua Lipa wore.

The moment

Dua Lipa wore her Botas Jornada Negras and shared the story on TikTok in a three-part "storytime" series about discovering the brand. The trilogy travelled across her TikTok, was reshared widely, and brought a wave of international attention to Botas Jornada and to Montserrat Messeguer as a Mexican luxury designer.

It was a particularly clean moment of organic celebrity provenance: a global pop figure, on her own channels, telling the story herself, of a pair of boots from a Mexican fashion house in Roma Norte.

Why these boots, in particular

Three things distinguish Botas Jornada from a typical cowboy boot:

  1. Construction. Goodyear welt — the same heritage method used by luxury makers like Lucchese and Allen Edmonds. The sole can be replaced (resoled) when worn, giving each pair a useful life of 5–10 years rather than the 1–2 years typical of cemented mass-market construction.
  2. Embroidery. The Ave Fénix (Phoenix Bird) embroidery on every pair is sewn by hand. The motif is the brand's signature and appears across the entire Botas Jornada family.
  3. Origin. Designed in Mexico City, handmade in Mexico, by Mexican artisans, with Mexican leather. The brand is fully Mexican by design, materials, and manufacture — an authentic provenance that very few cowboy-boot brands at this tier can match.

About the designer

Montserrat Messeguer founded her eponymous fashion house in 2017. She is the daughter of Mexican designer Lydia Lavín, studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York and the Paris American Academy, and holds a Master in Technological Innovation from Universidad Iberoamericana. She was a runner-up for the Pierre Cardin Scholarship awarded by Fashion Group International and has served on the board of FGI's Mexico City chapter, including as regional director.

Botas Jornada is the signature product of her fashion house. The brand also designs leather jackets (chamarras), slip dresses, fringed shirts (camisas flecos), sustainable denim, and a small leather goods line.
